1) How Long Does It Take For Chlamydia To Go Away?
How long does it take for Chlamydia to clear up? Can you have Chlamydia for years and not know it? These are questions that give headache to a lot of women at some point in their lives.
Chlamydia is a bacterial infection with the Chlamydia infectious agent, which is transmitted through sexualcontact. It`s among the most common STDs in the world. Chlamydia infects the urethra in men and the cervix, urethra and superior reproductive organs in women. Chlamydia can also infect the rectum, eye surface and eyelids.
An infected mother can transmit the infection to her baby during childbirth. Between 50% and 70% of infants are born from infected mothers. They acquire the infection in the eyes, rectum, vaginaand the back of the throat. Between 30% and 40% of these infected neonates develop complications, like conjunctivitis or pneumonia.
Chlamydia increases the risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, in case of exposure.
2) Causes
Chlamydia is an infection caused by a bacterium called Chlamydia trachomatis. It`s transmitted through vaginal, anal or oral sexualcontact with an infected partner. A pregnant woman transmits the infection to the newborn during birth. The infection can be present even if there are no symptoms and can also be transmitted until it`s treated.
Regarding the question “Can you get Chlamydia if you use a condom?” – Abstinence is the only 100% safe method of avoiding a bacterial infection. If you want to lower your chances of getting this infection, you should opt for a polyurethane condom when doing vaginal or anal sex (even oral sex). This is basically because no condom is 100% safe. As already mentioned, they lower the risk of getting bacterial infections.
3) Symptoms
Up to 90% of women and men with clamidiasis have no symptoms whatsoever.
The time period between the infection and the onset of symptoms, also known as the incubation period, might be from days to months. The symptoms usually start 1 – 3 weeks after the infected sexualcontact.
Symptoms in women include:
Symptoms in men include:
4) How often should you get tested for Chlamydia?
How do I know if I have chlamydia?
You can’t tell if you have chlamydia just by the way you feel. The only way to know for sure if you have chlamydia is to get tested — whether or not you have symptoms.
If you’re showing any signs of chlamydia, you should get tested. Testing is also a good idea if you’ve had unprotectedsex or if a partner has chlamydia (even if you don’t notice symptoms). In general, people who aresexually active should get tested for STDs, including chlamydia, about once a year. If you’re pregnant, get tested for chlamydia at your first prenatal visit.
Chlamydia testing is pretty easy and painless. The best part about getting tested for STDs? Once you get it over with, it can really put your mind at ease. And if you DO have chlamydia, it’s best to know right away so you can take medicine and get better as soon as possible.
What happens during a chlamydia test?
Chlamydia testing can be as simple as peeing in a cup. Sometimes the test is done by gently rubbing your genitals with a cotton swab, to take cell samples from your urethra, cervix, or anus. The samples are tested for chlamydia bacteria. Your doctor may also be able to see chlamydia symptoms, like discharge on your cervix, during an exam.
Chlamydia can look like other common STDs like gonorrhea, so your nurse or doctor might test for a few infections.
The idea of getting tested may seem scary, but try not to freak out. STD testing is a regular part of being a responsible person and taking care of your health. The good news is chlamydia is totally curable with medication — so the sooner you know you have it, the faster you can get rid of it.
